Spring Star Light Blue

Botanical Name: Ipheion uniflorum

Position: Full sun to part shade. Choose a position with good air circulation and protection from strong winds.

Climate: Suitable for cool, temperate and Mediterranean climates. Tolerates light frost once established.

Planting Time: Autumn to early winter.

Watering: Water thoroughly after planting, then keep soil lightly moist while plants are actively growing and flowering. Avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering as foliage dies back and keep bulbs relatively dry during dormancy.

Flowering Time: Late winter to spring.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser or blood and bone at planting. Feed again when growth appears and after flowering to encourage healthy bulb development for the following season.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soils.

Pests: Protect emerging foliage and flowers from snails and slugs. Good drainage helps prevent bulb rot.

Growing Tips: Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards at the recommended depth. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following season. Spring Stars are excellent for naturalising and can gradually form attractive clumps when left undisturbed.
