Jonquil Avalanche
Botanical Name: Narcissus jonquilla
Position: Full sun to part shade.
Climate: Suitable for cool, temperate, Mediterranean and dry climates. Frost tolerant. Performs particularly well in warmer regions where traditional daffodils may not flower reliably.
Planting Time: Autumn to early winter.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting, then wait until foliage appears before watering again. Water regularly during active growth and flowering. Reduce watering once foliage begins to yellow and keep bulbs dry during dormancy.
Flowering Time: Late winter to spring.
Fertilising: Apply blood and bone or a controlled-release fertiliser at planting time. Feed again after flowering to help replenish bulbs for the following season. Avoid excessive nitrogen.
Soil: Well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Jonquils are adaptable to a range of soil types but perform best in fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soils.
Pests: Protect emerging shoots and flower buds from snails and slugs. Aphids may occasionally be present.
Growing Tips: Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards at the recommended depth, or slightly deeper in warmer climates. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to help bulbs store energy for next season. Jonquils naturalise readily and can remain undisturbed for several years before dividing overcrowded clumps.
