Ixia — Produces masses of star-shaped flowers in vibrant shades of pink, red, orange, yellow, white, blue and purple, often with contrasting centres. Ideal for garden beds, borders, pots and cut flower displays, bringing brilliant colour to the spring garden.

Botanical Name: Ixia hybrida

Position: Full sun to part shade.

Climate: Suitable for cool, temperate, Mediterranean and dry climates. Not recommended for tropical regions. Light frost tolerant.

Planting Time: Autumn to early winter.

Watering: Water thoroughly after planting, then keep soil lightly moist while plants are actively growing and flowering. Reduce watering after flowering and keep corms relatively dry during dormancy.

Flowering Time: Spring to early summer.

Fertilising: Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting. Apply a balanced fertiliser or blood and bone when growth appears or as flower buds develop.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.

Pests: Protect emerging shoots from snails and slugs. Aphids may occasionally affect flower stems and buds.

Growing Tips: Plant corms with the pointed end facing upwards at the recommended depth. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so corms can store energy for the following season. Ixia can be left undisturbed for several years and divided when clumps become overcrowded.
