Long trailing vines with dusty purple coloured berries are a feature of the delicious Boysenberry. Thought to be a hybrid between Thornless Blackberry, American Dewberry, Loganberry and Raspberry, the fruit is aromatic and a little tart to taste. Great eaten as fresh fruit in fruit salads but fruit is quite soft and juicy and does not store terribly well, meaning you rarely see these delicacies in shops. Boysenberries are excellent for processing into jam, syrups and juice and are wonderful included in pies or tarts. Harvest early summer.
For best results train plants over a trellis and remove old dead canes in winter, leaving only vigorous healthy canes to produce the next crop. Protect fruit from extreme heat and ensure adequate water while fruit develops. Pick fruit when fully ripe for maximum sweetness. Prefers full sun to part shade.
